Goodbye Darling Poppy

I really hoped I would have good news to report today.  Dear little Poppy passed away this morning.

There was nothing anyone could do.  She had a dreadful night with laboured breathing, and deep in my heart I feared the worse.

She was at the vet's twice yesterday for serum and time in the oxygen tank.  She had an ultrasound that showed an enlarged liver.  Blood tests couldn't be taken until today, because the serum and oxygen were the priority.  They were keeping her alive.

Mr A took her to the vet very early this morning, and within minutes of arriving her little heart just gave up.   I am grateful that it happened this way, fairly quickly, with no unnecessary suffering, and that I didn't have to make the awful decision to let her go.

It never gets any easier.

We loved you so much and gave you a chance 4 years ago.  If we hadn't, you would not have survived.

Rest in Peace darling Poppy

  1. I'm so sorry to hear that Poppy passed away. At least it was quick at the end and hopefully painless. You and Mr A must be devestated. My heart goes out to you both. Peril

  2. Dear Ayak, I saw this on Facebook and my own heart sank a little to read that you'd lost Poppy. It sounds as though you did absolutely everything you could and, as you say, good that in the end, she went quickly. Her resemblance to Darwin has always made me feel very fond of her and I'm so sorry for your loss. Big hugs, Axxx

  8. Oh, no. I'm so sorry. I hadn't any idea that she was ill like that.
She will be sadly missed. You did give her a lovely life and you must feel comforted by that.
It seems incredible that I've just posted about another little dog called Poppy. Hope this doesn't upset you as I really didn't know about your loss when I posted.
    Hugs....

  9. Lend Me a Pup
    spacer

I will lend to you for awhile a puppy, God said,
For you to love him while he lives
and to mourn for him when he is gone.
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,
or maybe for two or three.
But will you, till I call him back
take care of him for me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you
and should his stay be brief
    you'll always have his memories
as solace for your grief .
I cannot promise that he will stay,
    since all from Earth return,
But there are lessons taught below
I want this pup to learn.

I've looked the whole world over
    in search of teachers true
And from the folk that crowd life's land
    I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love
    Nor think the labor vain
Nor hate me when I come to take my pup back again.

I fancied that I heard them say,
"Dear Lord Thy Will Be Done,"
For all the joys this pup will bring,
the risk of grief you'll run.
Will you shelter him with tenderness
Will you love him while you may
And for the happiness you'll know forever grateful stay.

But should I call him back
    much sooner than you've planned
Please brave the bitter grief that comes
    and try to understand.
If, by your love, you've managed
    my wishes to achieve,
In memory of him that you've loved,
cherish every moment with your faithful bundle,
and know he loved you too.

  10. Oh Ayak, how sad you must both be. As you say, it never gets any easier losing a much loved member of the family whatever the circumstances. And she was a key member of your lovely doggy family and a good companion to you over the years that you shared. The only comfort is the lack of suffering she had in her final days. It almost seems as if she's handed the baton on to Monty now, to keep an eye on you.

  11. They have such a bad start in life it's little wonder they suffer ill health later. Be comforted to know that you gave her 4 years of comfort and love. :)

  12. Dear Ayak, I'm so sorry about Poppy - what an awful shock for you both. She was such a sweetie. Thank you for your loving care of her - and of all the others.
We cried for a fortnight when the second of our previous two dogs had a heart attack and just collapsed. It was about 6 months before we got our present 2 poodles, and by that time my BH was climbing the walls with a serious attack of 'dog deprivation', even though it was his decision not to get anything sooner!

  16. I am crying now Linda, I am so upset. I never met Poppy, but she was so much like my Matilda. I am very sad for you and Mr. A, just I am pleased that she didn`t suffer and went quickly. You gave her the best years of her life and loved her unconditionally. Now she is being looked after elsewhere. My love and thoughts are with you both. F.XX
